Books. Podcasts. YouTube videos. Article links on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms. In today’s world, we have so much information at our fingertips. As Rachel Hollis says, “In today’s world of the google search bar, ignorance is a choice.” You can find any solution to your problem or curiosity by simply searching for it. But there has to be a point where you put the books down and actually get to work. Turn off the podcast and make those calls you know you need to do. Do your income producing activities.
There is a friend of mine on social media that loves to share inspirational quotes. Go to seminars and read great books. Give advice to other people who seem to be needing it. Here’s the thing though; I’ve never known this person to actually ACT on what they were talking about. Don’t get me wrong. (I’m literally writing a blog post that I want you to read.) I think it’s so important to read and listen to motivational books and podcasts. The most successful people in the world will tell you they read and are always thirsty for knowledge. But we need to ACT while we are learning.
What is your action plan each day? Today it’s 50 degrees and raining. My daughter is sick and napping. I want nothing more than to curl up on the couch under a blanket and read a book. It’s been a good two weeks since I’ve cracked a book open and it’s one of my favorite things to do. I’ve earned it! I should be able to take a break! But I have work to do. I need to get a few blog posts written. I still need to edit the curriculum for my women’s mastermind group that meets for the first time tomorrow. My website needs a few tweaks and my logo needs a final color pallet before we can make it official. I need to ACT on all the advice I’ve been given from the different coaching and consulting books I’ve read over the past four years. My official launch date for Rise Up Consulting LLC is November 1st and I’ve got a lot of work to do before then. Act, learn, repeat.
Back to the action plan. Or maybe it can just be a simple strategy. Do something productive and income-producing before you open that book or prepare listen to Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversation. (Oh my gosh – I just LOVE that podcast!!) Do something tangible that moves you closer to your goals. There won’t come a time for most of us when we are the best at anything. However, we become better by doing. Not by listening and taking notes. By ACTING. So before you spend 45 minutes listening to a webinar on how to increase your Instagram following, maybe you should spend a few minutes following a few people that you would like to follow you back. Post something to your social media page that will attract new followers. Then learn how to do it more effectively.
We only get a finite amount of time on any given day. There is only so much energy and coffee in the world. Use what you have when you have it. Don’t waste your most productive time of the day sitting on your coach for 3 hours. Set a specific amount of time for your self-development and get moving after that. The universe rewards the doers, not the wishers. Now close out of this article and get to work!
